Comparative Homogeneity Analysis Across Different Zones

Traditional material characterization techniques often fall short when dealing with complex geometries or multimaterial systems, for instance the brake pads. In these components, geometric discontinuities and the interface between the friction material and the backing plate trigger signal reflection, attenuation, and scattering during ultrasonic inspections, ultimately compromising data reliability. In response to these limitations, this case study evaluates whether VESevo technology can successfully characterize brake pads, analyzing both the standalone friction material and the complete system (friction material and metallic support). Ultimately, the objective is to verify the methodology’s capability to provide representative information despite the challenges posed by multilayer configurations and structural interfaces.

The characterization was carried out through the analysis of two main parameters: HVI (Hysteretic Viscoelastic Index), indicative of the energy dissipation capability of the material, and Index Stiffness, representative of the local stiffness of the system. As shown in the figures, the approach enabled mapping of the mechanical properties of both the friction material alone and the full assembly, allowing direct comparison between the two configurations.
The results highlight differences not only among the various friction materials analyzed, but also between the response of the isolated material and that of the complete system. The inclusion of the backing plate modifies the sample response, providing a more realistic representation of component behavior under operating conditions. The case study shows how VESevo technology enables effective nondestructive characterization of complex multimaterial systems. The possibility of analyzing both individual layers and the full assembly represents added value for the design, quality control and performance optimization of braking systems.
